What happens when I die?
It’s a question we all wonder about at some point:
What happens when I die?
The Bible gives us a clear and hopeful answer
— death is not the end. Every person will live forever somewhere. When our time on earth ends, our soul continues on into eternity.
The Bible says, It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment. (Hebrews 9:27) That means every person will one day stand before God. The most important question then won’t be how successful we were, how good we tried to be, or what religion we followed — it will be whether we ever received Jesus Christ as our Saviour.
Heaven — Eternal Life with God
For those who have trusted in Jesus, death is not something to fear. It’s the doorway to everlasting life with God. Jesus said, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live. (John 11:25)
Heaven is a real place — a home God has prepared for His children. It’s a place with no more pain, sorrow, or death. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.
(Revelation 21:4)
In Heaven, we will live forever in the presence of God, worshiping Him and enjoying perfect peace, joy, and love.
Hell — Eternal Separation from God
But the Bible also warns of another reality — a place called hell. Hell was not created for people, but for the devil and his angels. Yet when a person rejects God’s gift of salvation through Jesus, they choose separation from Him.
Jesus spoke very plainly about this. And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal. (Matthew 25:46) God takes no pleasure in anyone being lost. The Bible says that God is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hell is not a place God sends people to because He doesn’t love them — it’s where people go when they refuse His offer of forgiveness and life.
The Hope We Have in Christ
The good news is that no one has to fear death. Jesus came so that we could be saved and know for certain where we’ll spend eternity. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
Eternal life isn’t something we earn by good works or religion — it’s a free gift. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 6:23)
When you place your faith in Jesus — believing that He died for your sins and rose again — He forgives you, gives you new life, and promises you a home in Heaven. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. (John 6:47).
You Can Know for Sure
You don’t have to wonder or hope you’ll make it to Heaven someday — you can know. The Bible says, These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life. (1 John 5:13)
If you’ve never trusted Jesus as your Saviour, you can do that right now. Admit that you’ve sinned, believe that He died and rose again for you, and ask Him to forgive you and save you. He promises to hear and to give you eternal life.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Romans 10:13
Death is not the end — it’s the beginning of forever.
The question is: Where will you spend eternity? Jesus offers you hope, forgiveness, and the gift of eternal life if you’ll simply believe in Him today.
