What is the gospel?

The word “gospel” simply means “good news.”
And it truly is the best news the world has ever heard — that God loves us, even though we’ve all gone our own way, and that He made a way for us to be forgiven and have eternal life through His Son, Jesus Christ.

The Bible tells us that we were created to know and love God,
but our sin has broken that relationship. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23) Sin isn’t just the really bad things we see in the world — it’s anything we do, say, or think that goes against God’s ways. Because God is perfectly holy and just, our sin separates us from Him. For the wages of sin is death; (Romans 6:23a) That means our sin brings both physical death and spiritual separation from God forever.

But that’s where the good news begins.
God loves us too much to leave us in that condition. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8) Jesus, the perfect Son of God, came to earth and lived a sinless life. He willingly took our place, dying on the cross to pay for our sins. Then, three days later, He rose from the dead, proving His power over sin and death once and for all.

Because of what Jesus did,
anyone — no matter who they are or what they’ve done — can be forgiven and made right with God. The Bible says, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (John 3:16) Salvation is a gift; we can’t earn it or work for it. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8–9)

To receive this gift, we simply must turn from our sin
and place our trust in Jesus Christ — believing that He died for us, rose again, and is Lord of all. The Bible promises, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
(Romans 10:9)

This is the heart of the gospel:
God loves you.
Sin separates you.
Jesus died for you.
You can be forgiven and saved.

When you put your faith in Jesus, everything changes.
You are forgiven, made new, and given the promise of eternal life with God. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
(2 Corinthians 5:17)

This is the gospel — the good news that Jesus saves.
